These cruel words are just the beginning. Constance's mother systematically abused her daughter, both physically and emotionally, throughout her childhood. Regularly beaten and starved, the child was so desperate she took herself off to Social Services and tried to get taken into care. When Constance was thirteen, her mother simply moved out, leaving her daughter to fend for herself: there was no gas, no electricity and no food.

But somehow Constance found the courage to survive her terrible start in life. This is her heartbreaking - and ultimately triumphant story.

    This book was just great and had me hooked from the beginning. I have just downloaded the beyond ugly book to start. Well worth reading.

    I will never understand why the school did not do anything more to help 'Clare', but all good things come to those who persevere. This young lady remained strong through all adversity, I don't think I could have survived her life but well done Constance, well done. One thing though - I would have most definitely have changed my name and started my life anew. Brilliant book.

    Very touching. I ready this book a few weeks back and I haven't been able to forget the details. It is well written with touches of comedy here and there. Very sad though that a little girl had to go through this!!!
  • Shows what can happen

    It's well written has lots of detail about it my friend gave me alone of this book and what I liked yo know is how a 15 year old girl can survive without electricity or food juggling at one point 4 jobs still manage to go to school and still put up with her mum.I mean she didn't even know her proper name and when she got sick and her mum came to pick her up yet she still refused.

    Some person is giving this book 1 star when they don't even know what it's about. Well I think it is a brilliant book and it's rather sad and as it's a true story it's makes me feel for Constance!
